Chapter Nine

Christmas Eve was a paid holiday for Blyth and Bob, so naturally they wanted to play games all afternoon. I wanted to do some meal prep for Christmas and make some calls about the internet issue, so I convinced Blyth to take Taye with him to Vlad’s house to play until I came over for lunch.

In the past, Blyth had been concerned about what Taye or I might say around Bob. I think he still was a little, but ever since it had turned out that Bob had the inside scoop on the paranormal world, I think Blyth figured there wasn’t anything Taye could say to freak the guy out.

Not fifteen minutes after they had left, Blyth called me. “Geez,” I said. “I didn’t even have time to figure out which boyfriend I wanted to invite over, and you’re already checking on me.”

“Mum has a boyfwiend?” Taye said loudly.

“I’m on speakerphone, aren’t I?” I leaned against the kitchen island and massaged my forehead.

Blyth sighed. “Yes. Taye hit it when I dialed you.”

“Then I’m glad I didn’t say any bad words.”

“You’re such an egg,” Blyth said. “I’m calling because Taye is saying something about not eating cookies or he’ll have a heart attack.”

I searched recent memory, trying to figure out where that would have come from. “I don’t know why he would say that.”

“I didn’t say that, Mum!” Taye protested. I could hear Vlad and Bob in the background, probably talking about the game they were setting up, but the sounds of construction were noticeably missing. The crew must have had the day off.

“Then what did you say?” I asked.

“I said cadiac awwest. If I eat cookies I could have cadiac awwest.”

“Is this about fat?” I asked suspiciously. It had been a topic of interest in school one day recently, and I wished he had spent more time thinking about subtraction.

“Yes! Finawwy, someone has a cwue!”

“You’re being rude,” I informed him. “You can’t expect people to make the jump from cookies to cardiac arrest. Anyway, you know very well that eating a couple of cookies won’t do it. You get a lot of exercise and eat plenty of fiber and healthy food. Besides, you’re eight.”

“Okay,” Taye said, “but I was just twying to expwain it to Vwad because he eats a wot of cookies, and I don’t think he undastands about fat and cadiac awwest. Because when he sucked bwood aww the time, he didn’t have to think about that kind of stuff.”

I leaned my forehead into my palm and closed my eyes. “I’m sure Vlad is touched by your concern. Blyth, do you need me for this anymore?”

“One more thing. Did you know he brought the hermit crabs with him?”

“What? Taye, you know you aren’t allowed to get them out without permission, let alone take them somewhere!” The hermit crabs lived in a ten gallon terrarium (usually called ‘the crabitat’) on a low stand against the half wall between the kitchen and the living room. I had to keep
